You could create a pseudo device which provides a pseudo channel, and feed black (or whatever, vdr-logo perhaps) frames when tuned into that channel. It might be useful also on some situations if you need to run VDR without a DVB hardware, e.g. to play recordings on a laptop.
Not too difficult to implement, but some knowledge is required...

I just switch to a radio channel before I start a replay for my kids. When the replay stops, they only see a black screen and hear music.

Works, if there is no some programmed recording. Then comes recording, and changes transponder. For example thos news recorded for myself...

Hmm, streamdev has nearly everything needed. Client creates device, and server provides that 'Your vdr is suspended'. Unfortunately watching recording end that suspend.
