try this hdparm -X66 -d1 /dev/dvd(or a suitable device). with xine(not vdr) I had the sme prob..and mplayer...I figured....it must be DMA related :D
Thanks mate! It worked, I can watch now DVDs without any problem, even those with high bitrate (>8 Mb/s)
