If anyone else noticed that support for that type of remote got broken sometime after 2.6.32, I'm pleased to report mine is working again since I upgraded to kernel 3.0.
I've got one of those that has worked fine in 2.6.32 up to 2.6.39.3... It's connected with a serial IR. Maybe support for your particular IR receiver broke, but that remote has been just fine.
