I can now watch channels using xine. But vdr doesnt work, how do I
access vdr, am I supposed to get a menu or anything when I run it?

I often use KaxTV because it feels more like a X window program than VDR
which is designed more to be a
non X program. It took me a couple of days to realize that VDR start-up
console needed the keyboard focus
when I wanted to use VRD menu commands from the X. Anyway here is the
summary of the things needed if you want test vdr.
1) generate vdr channel conf file by using dvbscan found in the
dvb-apps. (channel.conf format is different than with
czap/tzap/szap/mplayer/xine but can be generated also by dvbscan by
giving "-o vdr" parameter)
2) open console and start vdr from there
3) start tvtime or some other viewer program which shows VDR signal
4) activate vdr console so that it gets keyboard focus
5) If first running time, configure keyboard by answering to questions
seen in the tvtime. (remember to keep focus on the console)
6) Use just configured keyboard settings for moving in the VDR menus
seen in the tvtime screen
