some ideas:
1.) typical suse problem. suse-kernels are in /boot, you have to edit 
the kernels Makefile and uncomment "export INSTALL_PATH=/boot"
2.) you made modules _and_ modules_install ?
3.) you checked the path of the modules (modprobe -c) ?
4.) depmod works ?

btw. neither the "suse_kernel" nor the "original_kernel", both 
versioned 2.4.4, worked for me (as posted recently) - i had to go for 
a straight 2.4.5 (which diabled my 3c509 btw - have to install an old 
ne2000 clone - never throw awy old stuff *g*).
