We should make a FAQ for such things. 

There is *no* real ftp proxy available. The squid on port 8080 can handle
FTP-downloads via HTTP-Requests with ftp:// URLs. Some Clients out there
can use this (and of course netscape).

Some software for "real" ftp-proxies is available, but as the FTP protocol
has originally no support for proxies, these are merely hacks. Implementing
and using them is a  hassle and definitely not worth the work. Just use a 
software which can make HTTP-Request for ftp:// URLs.
